We all know jaggery. but we know it as a natural sweetener. You must have seen your grandparents or even parents having a piece of jaggery after lunch or dinner. Or you must have heard that people used to offer jaggery with cold water if someone comes home during summer. If we observe, our ancient people had been using this natural sweetener in Indian households for a long time not just because its a natural sweetener but it has numerous health benefits and loaded with many essential nutrients.

Jaggery, commonly known as gur in India, is basically unrefined sugar obtained from the sugarcane. Though jaggery can be obtained from other sources like sap of coconut or date palm, the one made from sugarcane juice is the most commonly used in India. Jaggery is the best alternative for sugar, as sugar only adds empty calories to your body. Though jaggery does not increase the blood sugar level immediately, like sugar, eventually it will definitely increase the same. Even Ayurveda suggest not to include jaggery in a diabetic diet. So if you have diabetes, it is advisable to stay away from any form of sugar including jaggery.
